Public Notice

April 23, 2025 by St. George's 2 Comments

Quatrefoil_WideSt. George’s will host a public meeting May 7, 2025 at 5.30 pm in the nave to inform the parish and community about our projects to build an accessibility ramp and a columbarium and how we are caring for our historic graveyard in the midst of construction. This meeting is part of how we are working with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources and Dovetail Cultural Resources as we show respect for our ancestors and past while addressing the needs of the present.

Below is the full public notice as well as information on how to provide comments on this project. A PDF download link is also included below.

Public Notice of Intent to Relocate Interments within the St. George’s Episcopal Church Cemetery in Fredericksburg, Virginia

  1. APPLICANT:
    St. George’s Episcopal Church
    905 Princess Anne Street
    Fredericksburg, Virginia 22401
  2. PROPOSED WORK AND NEED FOR RELOCATION: The applicant proposes to perform three modifications to the church property located at 905 Princess Anne Street (GPIN #7789-14-3959) in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Proposed improvements include a handicapped access ramp, a new columbarium, and a walkway railing installation. All will take place within the Church cemetery, which contains numerous burials dating to the eighteenth and nineteenth century; some burials are marked with headstones and others are not. It is believed that approximately 16 burials are located in the improvement areas.

The Applicant has determined that disturbance of the cemetery cannot be avoided due to necessary work on the parcel to accommodate the improvements. Pursuant to the requirements of VA Code §10.1-2305, the Applicant intends to apply for a burial permit through the Virginia Department of Historic Resources (DHR) to allow the archaeological excavation and relocation of the aforementioned burials within the footprint of the ramp, columbarium, and railing. A copy of the completed application may be requested from DHR.

The exhumed human remains and funerary objects will be temporarily curated in a secure location at Dovetail Cultural Resource Group (a Mead & Hunt company) located in the City of Fredericksburg and will be respectfully reburied in an alternative location within the St. George’s Episcopal Church Cemetery, unless otherwise requested by interested parties.

  1. COMMENT PERIOD: Comments on this project should be made in writing, addressed to the following:

Kerri Barile Tambs, Dovetail Cultural Resource Group (a Mead & Hunt company)

The Peacemakers in Concert at St. George’s: April 19, 3pm

April 2, 2025 by Stephanie Dolezal Leave a Comment

St. George’s Episcopal Church will offer a free concert on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at 3 pm, featuring The Peacemakers.
The Peacemakers are a musical duo featuring Jackie (guitar and vocals) and Eddie (guitar, violin and vocals).  Together they share their renditions of world music and modern folk tunes with both covers and original songs.  They create a harmony that is only obtainable by musicians with a true connection, both with each other and their audience. The talent and warmth generated by Eddie and Jackie, along with their musical styling, signature tempo changes, blue notes, and crunchy chords, make for a truly captivating performance. The Sunday afternoon concert is free with donations accepted at the door.

Known for its lush acoustics and welcoming atmosphere, St. George’s offers a year-round concert series showcasing both local and nationally recognized artists. This performance promises an afternoon of “beautiful music in a beautiful space,” continuing the church’s tradition of musical excellence. Admission is free, with donations gratefully accepted at the door to support our music and ministry at St. George’s.

St. George’s Episcopal Church is a vibrant and inclusive spiritual community. “No matter who you are, whom you love, or where you’ve been, there’s a place for you here,” says the church’s leadership. With a commitment to service, justice, and peace, St. George’s welcomes all to experience its diverse worship and music offerings.

Ash Wednesday and Lent 2025

February 25, 2025 by Stephanie Dolezal Leave a Comment

An Invitation to a Holy Lent

from the Book of Common Prayer, p. 264

Dear People of God: The first Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord’s passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church to prepare for them by a season of penitence and fasting. Thereby, the whole congregation was put in mind of the message of pardon and absolution set forth in the Gospel of our Savior, and of the need which all Christians continually have to renew their repentance and faith. I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy Word. Lent is a season of preparation for the joy of the resurrection of Jesus at Easter. Just as we as Christians are invited to observe a Holy Lent, we invite you to journey with us in community during this sacred time of reflection and renewal. While some may associate the time of Lent with penitence, it is also a time of deepening our connection with God. It is a time we intentionally open ourselves us to God as we patiently wait for the blessings of Easter.

Ash Wednesday – March 5

We mark the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. The Ashes we receive on our foreheads remind us that we are “dust and to dust we shall return”. They are a solemn and comforting reminder that there are other pilgrims with us on this journey.

St. George’s will hold services at the following times:

  • 7:00 am: (no Eucharist)
  • 12:00 noon: (Holy Eucharist)
  • 4:30 pm: (intended for children and families but open to all)
  • 7:00 pm: (Holy Eucharist)

The invitation to receive ashes on the forehead as a sign of humility and mortality will be offered at each service.

Lenten Weekend 2025

February 10, 2025 by St. George's Leave a Comment

Lenten_Weekend_2025Accounting for Hope

March 7 – 9, 2025, with the Rev. Lauren Winner

Register Here

What gives us hope — not to mention abundance, resilience, and curiosity — amidst despair? 1 Peter 3:15 encourages us to be ready to give “an accounting of the hope that is in you.”

The Rev. Dr. Lauren Winner is an acclaimed writer, professor, and Episcopal priest. Her books include Girl Meets God, Mudhouse Sabbath, Still, and Wearing God. She is practiced in guiding a variety of people, from incarcerated women, to divinity school students, to professional authors, in the art of writing their stories as a way to account for the hope that is in them — which is part of how we can share our faith.

This weekend is open to all and includes sessions of reading, writing, and dreaming together, all incorporating the stories of contemporary poet and essayist, Christian Wiman, the great Harriet Tubman, and Lauren’s own stories. Lauren will encourage us to explore and share our own stories of facing challenges with hope. You do not need to be a writer to learn to tell your story from a fresh perspective using the tools Lauren will provide.

Childcare available upon request. Please note on registration form.

Register Today.

The weekend with the Rev. Dr. Lauren Winner includes (attend any or all of the sessions):

  • Friday evening: 6 pm Potluck dinner.
  • Friday evening: 7 pm Book study of Christian Wiman’s Zero at the Bone: Fifty Entries Against Despair, with a focus on the below chapters. There will also be an opportunity to discuss Lauren’s books as well.
    • Chapter 1: Will Love You in the Summertime
    • Chapter 6: Issues of Blood
    • Chapter 16: Faith Comes through Hearing
    • Chapter 26: A Burning World
    • Chapter 27: I Remember Yesterday. The World was So Young
    • Chapter 49: The Cancer Chair
  • Saturday afternoon: 1 – 4 pm Writing workshop (open to all…no writing experience necessary)
  • Sunday morning: Preaching at morning services – 7.45 am, 9 am (also on YouTube Live) and 11.15 am. Forum conversation at 10 am.

All events in Sydnor Hall. Pre-registration is encouraged.

Suggested donation: $10-$25 (depending on how much you attend. Participants in the writing workshop will receive a special journal.)
Lauren’s books will be available for sale – bring cash, check or your Venmo app.

Are you a Substack reader? Check out the new Substack from Collegeville Institute’s Ecclesial Writing Project (which Lauren directs)

Lenten Weekend is the first of three opportunities to explore writing for personal and spiritual renewal. On March 23, The Rt. Rev. Susan Goff will join us to talk about expressing ourselves through writing, poetry, and art. And on May 4, St. Georgian Linda Wickersham will lead a workshop on writing as part of your spiritual journey. Linda will follow up with a six-session writing workshop. These events are free and open to the public.
