Frequently Asked Questions
What is an “Estimate of Giving” versus a “Pledge”?
They are the same. The word “pledge” is commonly used but can have several meanings. In our context, we simply mean an estimate of what you plan to give in the coming year. It does not need to be an exact number and can be adjusted up or down as needed.
Why is it important?
By sharing a pledge/estimate to St. George’s, you are taking a step in faith, declaring your intention to make offerings in gratitude for God’s blessings through God’s work in the church. Pledging yourself to any spiritual practice increases the likelihood that you will actually do it. You are also helping support the ministries of St. George’s and being part of planning responsibly for the coming year. While we give thanks for each and every gift offered, pledged gifts represent over 80% of our annual operating support.
Should I pledge?
We ask everyone who is connected to St. George’s to share a pledge/estimate. Even if the amount is not as much as you would like to give (even if it is $0), please share that with us.
How much should I pledge?
Ask yourself, “where am I in my giving?” Some people give cash or make sporadic donations. Others are giving regularly but not a consistent amount. Others are calculating their giving as a proportion of their income, working toward the Biblical standard of the “tithe” or 10+ percent of income. We encourage every household to start by giving something and to take intentional steps to grow in giving over time. How much you pledge reflects a combination of your means, your joy and gratitude in giving, and a bit of challenge that helps you grow, not only in giving but also in faith.
What if I’m not sure how much I can give next year or what if I am unable to fulfill my pledge/estimate?
Your pledge is not a contract. It is a spiritual practice. If you are unsure about your capacity to give, still return the pledge card with your best guess amount. If that amount changes during the year, just inform the clergy or parish staff so that we can offer pastoral support and make adjustments to operations as needed. It’s better to make a conservative pledge than no pledge at all.
I want to give to several things at St. George’s such as The Table and the Capital Campaign. How should I divide my giving between those and my annual operating budget pledge?
Pledged offerings support the people, place, and pastoral leadership of St. George’s. These are essential to the church’s regular operating functions. Programs and projects such as The Table and the Capital Campaign, among others, are funded separately from the Annual Budget but cannot exist without our base of operations. Your annual pledge to the operating budget should be an amount that reflects your best annual giving amount, one you can sustain and grow, with other gifts in addition.
What are some ways I can make my offerings?
Gifts can be made via cash (in an envelope with a note), weekly/monthly checks, automatic bank drafts, credit cards, or gifts of appreciated stock and IRA Qualified Charitable Contributions (QCDs).
