Life in Christ Preaching Series

As we return to the program year, it is a good time to return to a basic question: “What does it mean to live as a disciple of Jesus?” Each week in our morning services, we will examine some qualities of “life in Christ” based on the appointed scriptures in the Lectionary.

  • Aug 23: Seeking freedom together.
  • Aug 30: Listening to God’s call.
  • Sept 6: Loving God and our Neighbors.
  • Sept 13: Forgiving abundantly.
  • Sept 20: Practicing Generosity.
  • Sept 27: Changing our Minds and Hearts.
  • Oct 4: Living our Best Life.

The adult forum at 9 am will offer a deeper dive into these themes as well.

Worshipalooza – Saturday, August 15

Plan now for our annual day of trainings for worship ministry leaders: lectors and intercessors, ushers and greeters, acolytes, livestream technicians, Eucharistic ministers, and more. For all returning and new ministers. We invite children, youth, and adults to be trained and help us lead worship!

Storytelling and Sharing: Ikeda-San

Last Sunday, we had an unexpected visitor to St. George’s, a Buddhist monk walking to Washington, D.C. on pilgrimage for peace. He began his journey near Asheville, N.C. a few weeks ago. Kanshin Ikeda, “Ikeda-San,” is from Japan and is currently based in Dhauli, India. He had heard about St. George’s from someone in Richmond and stopped in to see if we could help him find lodging for the night. We offered him water and food and enjoyed some conversation about his mission. By God’s grace, a parishioner had a room to offer for Sunday night, and Pastor Joe joined him for a couple of miles of walking for peace on Monday. He relies on the kindness of strangers for his needs along his journey.

His message, written by the founder of his monastic order, which he wrote in calligraphy for Pastor Joe, is simple: “Civilization does not mean to have electric light or airplanes or nuclear bombs. Civilization means not killing people, not destroying things, not making war. Civilization means to hold mutual affection and to respect each other.” As he walks, he beats his drum and chants a mantra for peace. We never know who will wander into St. George’s, and what a blessing it is to offer hospitality to a stranger, “for by doing that, some have entertained angels without knowing it.” (Hebrews 13:2). 

Youth Service Week Concludes at Juneteenth!

Just a brief while after the disciples began to follow Jesus, he took them aside and said—you all are now going to go and do the same things I have been doing. You will be the ones performing wonders, you will be the ones restoring the forsaken to dignity, you will be the ones to declare that God has good news to share, you’ll be the ones to turn the world upside down. I have to imagine they felt unprepared!

The Disciples had begun to follow Jesus because they wanted to know what amazing things he would do. Jesus called them to be his disciples to show them what amazing things they would do, to call them to transform the world.

This past week young people from St George’s followed the call of Jesus to live out their faith as disciples—to restore dignity, feed the hungry, heal a hurting world, and declare good news. Because of the hard work of our young people during Youth Service Week, we moved one step closer to realizing the vision of the Jeremiah Community as part of our shared ministry at Micah, neighbors received locally and organically grown produce harvested by our youth at the Rappahannock Education Farm, and we practiced what it means to be Beloved Community by volunteering at the 2026 Juneteenth Celebrations.

The world has need of faithful Christians, God has need of faithful Christians, and I am glad that as a church St George’s has committed to raise up empowered young people, covenanted to grow in our own faith and discipleship alongside them, and has decidedly answered the call of Jesus to turn the world upside down.

Save The Date! 4th Annual Ecumenical Pride Service – June 28

Join with our FXBG friends and denominational partners for a fourth annual Pride Service on Sunday June 28th at 4pm at Trinity Episcopal Church. The service will feature three reflections by three young adults, music by St. Georgian and newly ordained deacon the Rev. John Hager, and a festive reception across the street at The House.
