Support the Table: Giving Tuesday – December 2

It’s that time of year again when The Table at St George’s participates in GivingTuesday, a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and you! On Tuesday, December 2, you will have the chance to make a difference in our community by helping to ensure everyone has access to nutritious food and nourishing community! The Table at St. George’s operates every Tuesday in Market Square distributing farm fresh produce alongside gleaned breads, proteins, and snacks free of charge. Truly a place where the friendships formed sustain as much as the produce, this free farmers market has become a staple (and necessity) for the wider community. Support this work by giving this #GivingTuesday!

Advent Workshop – November 30

Our beloved Advent Workshop returns on the First Sunday of Advent, Nov. 30. During the 10 am formation hour, all are invited to Sydnor Hall to make advent wreaths and more. Our Fellowship Commission will provide Christmas Cookies to help get us in the festive spirit. We will also have some of our St. George’s Merchandise available for purchase. These branded items featuring artwork by local artist Pete Morelewicz benefit our Landmark Building Endowment.

Please consider helping out with the Flower Guild  in preparing for the Advent Workshop.  We will meet on Saturday morning, Nov. 28, 10 am – 12 pm in Sydnor Hall. This does not require specific skills, and all are welcome. If you have questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Sarah Bass.

Finding My Faith at Forty

I grew up in New Hampshire and was raised Catholic. I was baptized, received First Communion, was confirmed, and even attended a Catholic high school. My early faith experience was positive and grounding. But as I became an adult, building a career in sustainability and community service, I found that many of my values no longer aligned with the teachings of the Catholic Church. Over time, I stepped away — not just from Catholicism, but from church entirely.

It wasn’t until I met my husband that I was introduced to the Episcopal Church. I was immediately drawn to its open-heartedness, inclusive values, and the deep sense of welcome that seemed to radiate from the community. When our son was born in 2018, we had him baptized at Church of the Epiphany in Richmond, where my mother-in-law is an active member. That experience planted a seed.

Over the years, our family began to find a home at St. George’s. As we became more involved — me joining the Generosity Committee, participating in services, and attending events — I began to sense that this was something different. It felt like the perfect alignment of my values and faith — something I had been quietly searching for.

In late 2024, our family faced a painful season, grieving the death of a close friend and walking alongside a family member undergoing cancer treatment. During that time, the outpouring of love and support from St. George’s was unlike anything I had ever experienced in a faith setting. For the first time in my life, I felt like I had truly found a faith community that welcomed and supported not only me and my family, but everyone who walks through its doors.

So, earlier this year, on March 30th (my 40th birthday!) I was officially received into the Episcopal Church. Surrounded by family, friends, and the amazing St. George’s community, I stepped into a new chapter where my faith, values, and life’s work finally feel united.

I never expected to find my faith at forty, but now that I have, I feel deeply grateful — and excited — for the journey ahead.

Hi all! X here, and I’m so happy to have a chance to share my love for the church and our St. George’s family here 🙂 From the moment we stepped on the campus a few years back, we’ve been met with nothing but open arms and kindness, and my family of 5 have felt warmly welcomed from the start. I have never been particularly religious or had strong ties to a church community before, but there’s something about St. George’s that just draws you in and makes you WANT to be more involved.

Originally drawn to the wonderful preschool here which I’m honored to be a board member of now, we’ve since become active church goers again, gotten more involved in the youth group and formation, joined fascinating committees like the History Committee! (shout out to Cindy!), and most especially, started participating in all the incredible ministries St. George’s offers to our community. In fact, in all my years around religion, or any organization for that matter, I have never had so many opportunities to serve!

It has even inspired me to create my own ministry this year, giving out free clothes and essentials to anyone who needs them – no questions asked. In just a handful of months we’ve given away over 25,000 items in conjunction with The Table and our Monday night Community Dinners, and fortunately/unfortunately there’s no sign of it slowing down. It’s been an incredibly fulfilling project to take on, and has gotten me closer to not only those we serve in the area, but to God as well. I literally wake up every single morning and say to God, “I don’t know what you have planned for me today, but I will do my best to be ready for it!” Lol… And of course time and time again I am surprised with how it always comes together in the end 🙂

This has probably been the greatest takeaway so far since coming to St. George’s – trusting, and being more open to the Lord, in the same way I am with loved ones around me. It has taken me a while to get to this point – and I have much more growing to do! – but wow, what a gift that St. George’s offers us every single day: the *opportunity* to grow and learn in a safe and warm environment. We have a truly special community here, and I am beyond proud to be a part of it. Thank you for showing my family so much kindness over the years, and I look forward to seeing you around church!
