Faith Quashie in Concert at St. George’s

Faith_QuashieSt. George’s Episcopal Church will offer a free concert on Sunday, February 16 at 3 pm, featuring Faith Quashie.

Faith Quashie is a two-time DownBeat Award winning jazz vocalist.  She will be accompanied by the St. George’s Jazz Ensemble. The concert is free with donations accepted at the door.  All donations will benefit the Absolom Jones Fund which supports Episcopal HBCU’s (Historically Black Colleges and Universities.)

Located at 905 Princess Anne Street in historic downtown Fredericksburg, Virginia, St. George’s Episcopal Church offers a wide range of concerts throughout the year featuring local and out of town musicians. The nave’s lush acoustics provide the perfect backdrop for “beautiful music in a beautiful space”.

Free YogaVoice® Workshop

St. George’s is hosting a free YogaVoice workshop February 21 – 23, 2025. All are invited to participate. No previous experience with Yoga or singing required.

YogaVoice® is a personal transformation technology founded by opera singer and yoga teacher Mark Moliterno that helps you to find your deep, inner purpose and its clear expression. Time-honored yoga practices, yoga therapy techniques, and a wellness-based voice training method help you remove the obstacles that might be impeding your authentic voice. YogaVoice® training provides essential tools for cultivating an empowered voice in singing, public speaking, teaching, and entrepreneurship.

The YogaVoice® workshop, led by founder Mark Moliterno, takes place on:

  • Friday, February 21, 7 pm – 9 pm: Introductory Lecture – How Yoga breathing and simple postures can improve singing, speaking, and overall health
  • Saturday, February 22, 9:30 am – 4 pm: Yoga breathing and stretching techniques, finding your authentic voice, building a YogaVoice® practice
  • Sunday, February 23,  1:30 pm – 4 pm: YogaVoice® review and group phonation practice, singing in large and small groups

About Mark Moliterno:
Mark Moliterno, MM, E-RYT500, C-IAYT, YACEP, POLY, is an award-winning professional opera singer, voice teacher, yoga teacher/educator, IAYT-certified Yoga Therapist, workshop leader, and author. He is considered a thought-leader in the area of 21st Century vocal technology, a master teacher of both singing and classical yoga, and a specialist in helping people understand and connect to their authentic voices.

Mark holds the BM and MM degrees in Voice and Opera from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music where his teacher and mentor was the famous vocal pedagogue, Richard Miller. His extensive performing career has taken him to many countries in a variety of leading operatic roles and as a concert soloist and recitalist.

Since 2009, Mark has also refined his gifts and skills as a yoga teacher and yoga therapist. He is the Creator and Founding Partner of YogaVoice®, a unique personal transformation technology that combines several traditions of Yoga with Systematic Voice Technique, to develop authenticity and wellness in the art of singing and personal communication. A sought-after clinician, he presents YogaVoice® workshops internationally at professional conferences and gatherings.

Mark has published articles in YogaLiving Magazine and The Journal of Singing. He is a co-author of The Musician’s Being and The Musician’s Breath, and is the author and featured instructor of The Musician’s Breath Yoga DVD. He will be a featured author in an Oxford University Press book on 21st Century Vocal Pedagogy, due in early 2025.

Mark Moliterno was the recipient of the prestigious Patrick D Kenan Award for Vocal Health and Wellness from the Duke Voice Care Center (2019). He is a member of the Part-Time Faculty at The New School College of Performing Arts in New York City and maintains private voice and yoga therapy studios in New Jersey, New York City, eastern Pennsylvania, and remotely.

2025 Annual Meeting and Vestry Election

vestrySt. George’s Annual Meeting will occur during a combined 10 am worship service on Sunday, January 26, 2025. Part of the Annual Meeting will include electing four new members to our Vestry (lay leadership council). We give thanks for the nominees who have offered to serve. You can read more about them in their bios below.

The vestry election will be part of the annual meeting. In order to vote in the election, you must be a registered, baptized, adult (16+) member of St. George’s “in good standing.” “In good standing” is defined by the canons as members of the parish who have been faithful in corporate worship, unless for good cause prevented, and have been “faithful in working, praying and giving for the spread of the Kingdom of God.” In keeping with the canons (regulations) of the Episcopal Church, you must be present in person in order to vote. Even though we only have four candidates for four positions, we must still complete a balloting process with at least 10% of our eligible members participating.

 

Kit Burns – Attends 9 am Service

I feel a strong push to enable the growth of God’s work. My love of St. George’s, my desire to deepen my own spirituality, my past leadership and vestry experiences, are ways in which I believe I can be of service to St. George’s vestry and our community. In my free time, I play lots of golf and I enjoy cooking.
Additionally, I bring these gifts, skills, and abilities:

• Purposefully listening for and discerning God’s voice in my life
• Past experiences on 3 different vestries
• I was professionally responsible for managing goals, budget and personnel of a 30 person branch

• Most of my community involvement revolves around St. George’s. I am active in women’s golf both locally and statewide.

Wendy Cannon – Attends 11.15 and Celtic

Serving on vestry would allow me to participate in decisions made for St. George’s. If you really care about something, you need to get involved. We are in a time of transition and I would be honored to serve on the vestry as St. George’s grows and changes. In my free time, I enjoy cooking, reading, and time with family and friends.

In addition to strong leadership skills, I truly consider how people might feel when making decisions. I believe one of my strongest gifts is intuition which I always use to guide me. On the practical skill side, particularly in my nonprofit work, I am a good writer and editor.

I am ever encouraged and thankful for God’s blessings through Jesus in my life. With that, knowing my salvation in our Lord I firmly believe in serving both inside the Church walls and taking that light into the world. St. Georges is encouraging in its many community offerings, I’m inspired. In my free time I enjoy hiking, fishing, and hunting.

Ministry Involvement:
I served in the United Methodist Church as a Trustee (President and Vice) 2018-2020; I was the United Methodist Men’s group President 2018-2019 and Vice in 2017. And I served on the staff Pastor Parish Relations committee 2015-2018. In the Baptist world I also served on the Pastor Search Committee.

Professional / Volunteer Experience:
• I work for the US Army, I have worked for all the Services as a civilian and am a Retired Navy Master Chief Petty Officer.
• Micah cold weather shelter,
• Rebuilding Together multi-county assistance in sprucing up homes for some less-fortunate.
• Participating in the Fredericksburg Walk for suicide awareness and remembrance.

Linda Wickersham – Attends 9 am Service

I would be honored to serve on St. George’s vestry. I am compassionate and empathetic and develop rapport with people easily. I taught English, history, journalism, and philosophy for 28 years and still love to teach and present. I am currently a writer and editor and offer my skills to the church.

Hazel Run in Concert at St. George’s

Hazel Run (Linda LaFave, Karen Richardson, and Stuart Whitford) is a folk group that draws their musical inspiration from Americana, soul, and rock. The concert is free with donations accepted at the door.
