Interfaith Potluck on March 26

Overflow SeatingA group of local interfaith leaders, including our clergy, meet regularly to discuss what it means to be neighbors. They are inviting members of their congregations to a potluck lunch on March 26 from 1-3 p.m. at the Olde Silk Mill on Princess Anne St. Bring a main dish, side, or dessert to share (no pork or alcohol please).

St. Georgians who would like to attend are asked to RSVP to the Rev. Gay Rahn so that we can have an accurate seat count.

 

Westminster Schola Cantorum Concert on March 10

The Schola Cantorum of Westminster Choir College, directed by James Jordan, returns to St. George’s for a concert on Saturday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m.

The program includes music by Mozart, Brahms, Lauridsen and Mealor.  A highlight will be the premiere of the composition for which the concert is titled: Crossing the Bar by Anthony Bernarducci.  The work is a setting of the Tennyson’s poem with the same title, which the poet wrote three years before his death and employs the metaphor of a sand bar to describe the barrier between life and death.

Tickets are $15 at the door.  Students and children are admitted free.

Worship

  • Ash Wednesday Eucharist services with imposition of ashes, March 1, noon and 7 p.m.
  • Ash Wednesday children’s service, March 1, 10 a.m.

  • Noonday prayer on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays when the church is open.

Prayer

  • Lectio Divina, Monday nights, 7 p.m. Faulkner Hall. Come share this special time with a small group using the ancient, contemplative practice of Lectio Divina, or “Divine Reading.” Through reading scripture, listening to each other’s reflections, prayer and meditation, we will give the scripture new life and meaning and let God speak directly to our hearts. Facilitated by Barbara Atkins. RSVP to the church office at 540-373-4133 helpful but not required. You need bring nothing but yourself and an open heart.

Lenten Weekend 2017

  • “Being Passionately Christian and Becoming Compassionately Interfaith” Featuring the Rev. Dr. Sathi Clarke, March 4-5: More information here

Adult Christian Education

  • Our Lenten Sunday programs will start on March 12. In Sydnor, we’ll have “Expanding the Spiritual Imagination: The Sermon on the Mount” with our rector. In Faulkner, we’ll explore Parker Palmer’s “Five Habits of the Heart.” More information to come: Stay tuned!

Environmental Stewardship

  • Lenten Carbon Fast: The Environmental Stewardship group encourages St. Georgians to sign up for daily emails with tips on reducing your carbon footprint during Lent. Sign up at www.macucc.org/carbonfast or text CARBONFAST to 22828.
  • March Movie – Rappahannock: March 16 at 6:30 p.m. Celebrate the beauty of our historic river with this Bayley Silleck-directed documentary. Brought to you by Friends of the Rappahannock.
  • Water Justice Conference: March 22-24. This conference, offered in partnership with Trinity Institute in New York, will focus on the need for water justice initiatives in areas of access, droughts, pollution, rising tides, and flooding. We’re bringing New York to Fredericksburg for an important conversation on water justice.

You’re invited to attend Trinity Institute, an annual conference that takes place in New York City and at partner sites around the country via webcast, including at St. George’s. We’ll develop a deeper appreciation for water as a sacred gift, gain a thorough understanding of the relationship between water justice and climate change, and learn what we can do about water issues of access, pollution, drought, and rising tides.

  • Wednesday Night, Faulkner Hall, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. — Opening session and keynote with Sen. Barbara Boxer.
     
    Thursday morning: 9 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., Sydnor Hall. Session 1: “Water: Commons or Commodity?”
    The United Nations has declared water as a human right. Global markets regard it as a commodity. Can a fresh approach to market capitalism serve the common good, or does the world need a new and different system of exchange?
     
    Thursday afternoon, 2 p.m. to 5:45 p.m., Sydnor Hall. Session 2: The Global and the Local
    As Hurricane Sandy demonstrated, New York City is vulnerable to sea rise and surge. Climate change is making matters worse. Speakers will examine New York’s issues as a model of how to examine local problems in light of global realities.
     
    Friday morning, 9 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., Sydnor Hall. Session 3: “What Churches Are Doing to Make a Difference”
    People of faith are working for water justice all over the world. Speakers will talk in practical terms about the challenges and achievements, and we will examine what strategies lead to projects that truly improve people’s lives.
     
    Friday afternoon, 2 p.m. to 5:45 p.m., Sydnor Hall. Session 4: “Being Agents of Change”
    As the conference closes, our work begins in earnest. Our speaker is a leading climate scientist who knows both the data on climate change and its impact and also the solutions that lead her to say “Together, we can fix this.”
