2017 Trinity Institute: Water Justice

We’re bringing New York to Fredericksburg for an important conversation on water justice.

You’re invited to attend Trinity Institute, an annual conference that takes place in New York City and at partner sites around the country via webcast, including at St. George’s. We’ll develop a deeper appreciation for water as a sacred gift, gain a thorough understanding of the relationship between water justice and climate change, and learn what we can do about water issues of access, pollution, drought, and rising tides.

  • Wednesday Night, Faulkner Hall, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. — Opening session and keynote with Sen. Barbara Boxer.
     
    Thursday morning: 9 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., Sydnor Hall. Session 1: “Water: Commons or Commodity?”
    The United Nations has declared water as a human right. Global markets regard it as a commodity. Can a fresh approach to market capitalism serve the common good, or does the world need a new and different system of exchange?
     
    Thursday afternoon, 2 p.m. to 5:45 p.m., Sydnor Hall. Session 2: The Global and the Local
    As Hurricane Sandy demonstrated, New York City is vulnerable to sea rise and surge. Climate change is making matters worse. Speakers will examine New York’s issues as a model of how to examine local problems in light of global realities.
     
    Friday morning, 9 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., Sydnor Hall. Session 3: “What Churches Are Doing to Make a Difference”
    People of faith are working for water justice all over the world. Speakers will talk in practical terms about the challenges and achievements, and we will examine what strategies lead to projects that truly improve people’s lives.
     
    Friday afternoon, 2 p.m. to 5:45 p.m., Sydnor Hall. Session 4: “Being Agents of Change”
    As the conference closes, our work begins in earnest. Our speaker is a leading climate scientist who knows both the data on climate change and its impact and also the solutions that lead her to say “Together, we can fix this.”

EmpowerHouse and the Clothesline Project

Every day, EmpowerHouse–supporting survivors of domestic violence–provides free help to adults and their children. As an accredited domestic violence center, they do not charge for services. Thanks to donations from our community, they are able to continue providing free services to anyone who needs them. EmpowerHouse and St. George’s are partnering to bring you the Clothesline Project in Sydnor Hall, Feb. 3-8, 2017.

The Clothesline Project is a visual display that bears witness to violence targeted against women. The Clothesline t-shirts are individually designed and crafted to publicly express the personal experience of a survivor. The shirts share her words, her story, and her emotions. The Clothesline provides a safe forum for women to speak about the abuse and to educate the public about the extent, prevalence, and impact of violence against women.

The shirts will be provided by EmpowerHouse and are color coded to show the form of abuse and whether the victim survived the abuse they experienced:

  • White represents women who died because of violence;
  • Yellow or beige represents battered or assaulted women;
  • Red, pink, and orange are for survivors of rape and sexual assault;
  • Blue and green t-shirts represent survivors of incest and sexual abuse;
  • Purple or lavender represents women attacked because of their sexual orientation;
  • Black is for women attacked for political reasons.

The Clothesline Project will be hung in Sydnor Hall on Friday, Feb. 3 and be available for First Friday viewing.  On Sunday, Feb. 5 at 10 a.m., St. George’s Adult Forum will feature Sarah King, Director of Support Services at EmpowerHouse, presenting the Clothesline Project and talking about our community’s efforts to support and empower survivors of domestic violence.  The shirts will remain in Sydnor Hall until Wednesday, Feb. 8.

2017 Lenten Weekend at St. George’s

“Being Passionately Christian and Becoming Compassionately Interfaith”

As St. George’s continues to explore the dynamic of being a compassionate community and sharing this with our interfaith neighbors, we have invited a special guest speaker for our Lenten Weekend program.The Rev. Dr. Sathianathan (“Sathi”) Clarke, current chair of World Christianity at Wesley Theological Seminary, is a world-renowned lecturer on global Christianity and interreligious dialogue. We are thrilled to have this award-winning teacher and scholar in our midst for a three-part program learning how being fully in touch with our Christian faith makes us better able to be peacemakers and life-bearers in community with people of all faiths.

We’ll explore how we can realize depth in Christian prayer by gleaning from the breadth of other religious traditions. A potluck supper will follow in Sydnor Hall from 6 to 8 p.m.

10-11 a.m. Presentation in Sydnor Hall

We’ll examine three dimensions of being “Blessed Peacemakers” that come from Islam, Buddhism, and Christianity. Dr. Clarke will also preach at the 11:15 a.m. service.

Covenanted Toward Abundant Life

2:30-4 p.m. Presentation in the Nave

We’ll focus on how we might reimagine Christian mission for abundant life in our consecrated interreligious environment.

All events are open to the general public. You do NOT have to be a member of St. George’s to attend.

We suggest a donation of $25 per person for the weekend; this helps cover the expenses of bringing outstanding writers, teachers and thought leaders to you. We want our speakers to be accessible to all, and we know that some people will be able to donate more than $25, and others less. There is no cost for students.  Childcare will be provided if there is a sufficient need.

Epiphany Service and Party

January 6, 2017, 7 p.m., St. George’s Nave and Sydnor Hall

A festival worship service in the church followed by a party downstairs in Sydnor Hall with heavy hor d’oeuvres (and maybe some dancing!) to celebrate the Epiphany, the revealing of Jesus to the magi from the east by the guiding of a star. Along the way, we will bless a married couple and gaze one more time upon the holy family crèche as we hear a last Christmas anthem from our Compline choir. Nursery available. All ages welcome.
