Ash Wednesday and Lent 2025

February 25, 2025 by Stephanie Dolezal Leave a Comment

An Invitation to a Holy Lent

from the Book of Common Prayer, p. 264

Dear People of God: The first Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord’s passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church to prepare for them by a season of penitence and fasting. Thereby, the whole congregation was put in mind of the message of pardon and absolution set forth in the Gospel of our Savior, and of the need which all Christians continually have to renew their repentance and faith. I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy Word. Lent is a season of preparation for the joy of the resurrection of Jesus at Easter. Just as we as Christians are invited to observe a Holy Lent, we invite you to journey with us in community during this sacred time of reflection and renewal. While some may associate the time of Lent with penitence, it is also a time of deepening our connection with God. It is a time we intentionally open ourselves us to God as we patiently wait for the blessings of Easter.

Ash Wednesday – March 5

We mark the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. The Ashes we receive on our foreheads remind us that we are “dust and to dust we shall return”. They are a solemn and comforting reminder that there are other pilgrims with us on this journey.

St. George’s will hold services at the following times:

  • 7:00 am: (no Eucharist)
  • 12:00 noon: (Holy Eucharist)
  • 4:30 pm: (intended for children and families but open to all)
  • 7:00 pm: (Holy Eucharist)

The invitation to receive ashes on the forehead as a sign of humility and mortality will be offered at each service.

Noon Prayer with Holy Eucharist and Healing Prayer – Wednesday, April 13 at 12 pm
Clergy lead a short noon service in our Nave with Holy Communion and Healing Prayer.

Maundy Thursday – April 14 at 7 pm
We enter into the experience of the disciples stunned by Jesus’ insistence that he would take on the role of a servant and wash the feet of the others. Anyone who wishes will be able to have their feet washed – and wash the feet of others. The service will continue with Eucharist followed by the stripping of the altar (also livestreamed on YouTube Live).

Good Friday – April 15 at 12 pm and 7 pm

The Liturgy of the Light is one of the beautiful experiences Catechesis of the Good Shepherd gives us. It is a children’s Easter Vigil service, and adults are welcome as well. Each child receives their own “light of Christ,” and we conclude with a simple Eucharist prepared by the children. We will celebrate the Liturgy of the Light in Sydnor Hall. Masks are required to help care for our youngest children.

8 pm: The Great Easter Vigil in the Nave. Experience the wonder of darkness-into-light, dramatic presentations of our Salvation History, and the joy of Easter, with Holy Eucharist.
