Parish Prayer Partners in Fall 2019

August 27, 2019 by St. George's Leave a Comment

Prayer is the glue that binds our community together! It’s time for “3P in F,” the fall edition of our semi-annual parish-wide prayer activity. Sign up–alone or with members of your household, including children–to pray for another member or household of the parish in the weeks leading up to Advent. Your name will be given to someone else for prayer. Every week you will receive a message of encouragement and instruction about ways to pray. Later this year, we’ll meet up for a fun event to “reveal” who’s praying for whom! Deadline to sign up is September 30, 2019.

If the form isn’t displaying correctly (as with some mobile devices), click here.

Unity at The Table

October 25, 2018 by St. George's Leave a Comment

Today is National Unity Day, but you’d never know it by looking at the headlines and news. Everyday at The Table at St. George’s is National Unity Day – Kindness/Acceptance/Inclusion. Yesterday the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank came in to do their annual inspection of our food pantry. One of the questions concerned who we allow to shop. Our answer was anyone who walks in the door and asks for food. We invite them to come back weekly as long as they have a need. Another question was about the area we serve. We have people come from Manassas, Triangle, King George, Caroline, Orange, Stafford, Spotsylvania, as well as Fredericksburg. We even serve people passing thru Virginia who have been told to go to The Table.

One of our regulars told us that when she wakes up on Tuesday, she is happy because she knows she will be welcomed at The Table where she’ll find community and veggies! How lovely is that!! The fields and orchards are almost done for the year. A volunteer commented last night that he is seeing more people on the street, and we definitely experienced an upturn in numbers last night. The woolly worms are supposedly predicting a rough winter. Someone handed me a bag of potatoes for The Table & said it was a Buy One/Get One deal at her store, but she could only use one. Every grocery store seems to have an abundance of offers like that & if you can’t use the extra box, can or bag yourself, please think of The Table. We can definitely use it.

Volunteer and Get Involved

The Table and our Community Dinner ministries are in need of volunteers. Our produce team needs adult and teen volunteers on Sunday afternoons from 2:30 – 4 p.m. to meet and unload the fresh produce from the farm truck. Crates can weigh up to 40 lbs., so a little muscle helps. 3rd Monday of the month Community Dinners need to update their list of volunteers. If you are able to come serve, clean up, wash dishes between 4:30 to 7 p.m., please let us know. For both – Contact Grace in Action to get involved.

When prayer comes around

July 1, 2015 by Leave a Comment

By Russ Carter, leader of Stephen Ministry at St. George’s Episcopal Church, Fredericksburg, Va.

lightstock_131372_medium_helen_Recently, our family received some grave health news; we rushed home from vacation for a doctor’s appointment to discover that the dreaded C word had entered our lives.

Being an active Stephen Minister and a Healing Prayer minister at St. George’s, I fully understand the power of prayer. After informing our biological family, we turned to our spiritual family; we also turned to God. When we brought our fears and concerns to St. George’s, we were greeted with prayers and embraces, with members of our community surrounding us with love. When we told the members of the Table, Linda’s crew, along with Carey, circled her praying for God’s comfort. Reverend Bob Miller brought God’s Love to Linda with a ceremony of the laying on of hands.

Many different pastoral care groups brought their love and God’s Love to us. Linda recently received a blessed prayer shawl from the members of the Prayer Shawl commission. Each time she wraps herself in the shawl, she feels the love and comfort of the women who bring the comforting gift of God’s Love through their talents.

Over the course of two weeks, we were prayed over and comforted by the blessings of God. We were not allowed to dwell in doubt or uncertainty. The blessings and comfort came from the never-ending love and care of our spiritual family; our friends at St. George’s brought us God’s Love. The night before the surgery, the Table crew came to our home with more of God’s Love. We were both surrounded by God’s comfort, as Carey led us all in prayer.

Between the love of Joe, Carey, and our daughter, Megan, we received great comfort (and company) the day of the surgery. Prayers for comfort transformed into prayers of thanksgiving. Prayer is the centerfold of our existence. The Love of God and the love of our family at St. George’s are things of beauty.

Through this entire ordeal, with doubts and fears creeping into our lives, Linda always had the strong faith that all would be well. She was correct; all turned out well.

As a prayer minister, I always feel the power of God, when praying for and with others; it is a very profound feeling of God’s Love between two of his children. As a recipient of this prayer, and a very strong faith in God, we are blessed by powerful nurturing forces that I pray that others will find through the love of our prayerful family of St. George’s.
