Annual Meeting 2018 Details
St. George’s will gather for its annual meeting to elect the next class of vestry members on Dec 9 at 10:00 a.m. in the church nave at a combined meeting and worship service. There will be no 9 or 11:15 services. We will still hold the 7:45 and 5:30 services but voting will only occur at 10. The meeting and service are open to everyone.
Why are we shifting to a different format this year?
The main business of the annual meeting is electing four vestry members for 3-year terms. Our Episcopal church canons (laws) require us to “elect” vestry members. Many of us have struggled with this process as it means some people are chosen while others may feel rejected. Selecting church leaders is rightfully a spiritual discernment of whom God is calling, not a popularity contest. Conducting the election in the context of a worship service will set a more prayerful mood. Last year we offered voting opportunities at all the services. This was really stretching the limits of how the Diocese expects us to conduct the election. We will only vote during the 10:00 a.m. service and meeting this year. And again, I hope that it will bring an enhanced sense of discerning God’s will together.
The canons stipulate that only registered members of the parish, in good standing (actively attending and financially contributing) are eligible to vote. If you are not sure if you are registered, please contact the church office asap. We operate the election on the honor system. If you are not eligible to vote, we ask that you participate by praying during the election portion of the service while others fill out their ballots.
By combining the meeting with our principal worship service, I hope that we have a greater sense of participation as a whole congregation than we have had at separate meetings in Sydnor Hall. I encourage as many people to attend as possible from all the services so that we can see and pray with one another. Some have expressed concern that the children in the service may get restless. We will provide a special activity for kids to do during the announcements which will be somewhat extended but not too much. We are spreading out elements of the meeting throughout the service, so that it will flow along. There will also be fewer reports as we have had at other annual meetings. My hope is to have a meeting in February 2019 to give a true “annual report” of 2018.
As always I welcome your feedback and ideas. As we try a new thing, I pray God blesses our meeting and gives us wisdom and grace as we worship and give thanks for St. George’s and the opportunities we have to serve, care, learn, pray, give, and grow together.

Kris Boyd

Having grown up in the Episcopal Church, I watched my parents and grandparents serve on vestry. As a child, I knew that one day I too would run for vestry. During my adult life, I have served in various leadership positions within the church, but not vestry. I have put much prayer and consideration to this. I feel called to this ministry and hope to use this opportunity to grow, learn and serve the church in a new way of living into my baptismal vows.
I am a cradle Episcopalian. My love for church and my relationship with the Trinity was nurtured and strengthened by my family. Church and my faith have always been an important part of my life, although there were a few years as an adult when grief slowed down my attendance and participation while I wrestled with God. I was brought back to a more active participation when my husband and I became parents. Raising our daughter gave me a new understanding of God’s love for us as a parent. I am grateful to be a member of this parish.

Lucretia Edreos

I am a new member of St. George’s and have been active in our community since becoming an Episcopalian in 2017. I love and care very much about our community and want to further contribute to its growth and success.
I was born in NY. Received my BBA from Baruch College of Business Adm. (CUNY). I was Vice President and Administrative Deputy of the corporate lending division of an international bank in NYC. After work I devoted my energy to the Greek American community and the performing arts. I studied music and played the clarinet for many years. I retired to Virginia in 2013 and made the decision to give back to community. I have done so through the Fredericksburg AARP and St. George’s. And, in this spirit, I would like to contribute further as a vestry member.

James Maxfield

I first started attending St. George’s in 2002. I would like to support and give back to my church home that I love, and I am finally in a place/time to do so.
I was baptized and confirmed Episcopal 1967/1980. I lived in many places up until age 12 (Iowa, Amman Jordan, Maryland, upstate New York, New York City, and central New York) until my family moved to Virginia in 1979. I graduated from Osbourn Park high school in 1985, and have a B.A. and M.A. from George Mason University. I have attended St. George’s since 2002, and married Kathy there in 2005. I have 4 children (Daniel, Andrew, Wesley, and Anna). I am a running and bicycling enthusiast, enjoy boating (canoes, SUP’s, kayaks, SUP’s), camping (family and with Boy Scouts), and fishing.

Connie Nance

I have served lifelong. Family, community, & serve those who serve our country. As single parent of three children with disabilities, advocated for child care for families with special needs children. Filed, fought, and prevailed without an attorney first discrimination complaint based on disability for my son, Devin. Prayed daily to be an Instrument of Thy Will. Goal was to change Army. Devin inspired and opened doors for active duty parents serving Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard children. God’s vision was greater. I am called to serve to be an Instrument of Thy Will.
I have worked as Director of Safety Fourth US Army with 22 General Officer subordinate Commands. I worked as NAVOSH Director for a Naval Air Station. I worked for Marine Corps Deputy Commandant Combat Development and Integration, Marine Corps Combat Development Command as Director Force Preservation. I received the Meritorious Service Medal for Civilian Service from the Army and the Navy. My Grandfather was from England, was Anglican, and with his loving influence I found my way to St Georges. I was Confirmed and Baptized April 14, 2013 at St. Georges.

Ralph Powell

I believe my experience on Vestry, especially as Finance Chair and Stewardship Chair is needed as we approach the 300th anniversary of St. George’s. Also my experience in working with the consulting firm on the Nave Renovation would be useful if and when we undertake another capital campaign.
Ralph and his wife Diane have two grown sons, a grandson, a granddaughter and a great granddaughter. They moved to Fredericksburg from Trumbull, Connecticut in 2001 after Ralph retired from Bankers Trust/Deutsche Bank in New York City, as Vice-President, Infrastructure Finance. At Trinity Episcopal Church in Trumbull, he had been Treasurer, on Vestry, in choir, and many other roles. Since joining St. Georges, Ralph has served 3 terms on Vestry, 9 years as Finance Chair, 2 years as Stewardship chair, and 8 years as Webmaster. He was also involved with Nave Renovation, Long Range Planning, Choir, Hand Bells, and LEM.

Tres Seaver

I have enjoyed very much my time this year on the vestry, filling Bill Carter’s spot, and believe I can continue to contribute on the vestry as we move forward into our fourth century in this special place.
Tres is a cradle Episcopalian: baptized at St. Matthews’, Albuquerque (1962); confirmed at St. Christopher’s, Fort Worth (1974); active at St. Bede’s/Autry House, Houston, while at Rice University (1980-88); married Elizabeth at her home parish, St. James’, Houston (1987), and active there until moving to Fredericksburg in 2000. He loves listening to, writing, and playing music of many styles, and enjoys cooking, Tres makes his living running a software development consultancy in downtown Fredericksburg.

Matt Stover

Matt is a great family man of strong faith in Christ who is a regular and dedicated member of St. George’s Episcopal Church. His work with the St. George’s youth ministry is commendable considering this is in additional to his dedication to his own children. Matt is eager to take on responsibility and give back to his church and community.
Matt, his wife Lauren and daughter Mia have been attending St Georges since 2012. They welcomed their son Wyatt to the world in 2014. Matt and Lauren were confirmed in 2016 and both of their children were baptized that same year. A big decision factor in choosing St. George’s for them was the welcoming nature of everyone they met and how included their children were. As a family they are outdoor enthusiasts often spending time camping and most recently getting the involved in golf.

St. George Chamber Orchestra to Perform Free Concert
St. George’s Episcopal Church will host The St. George Chamber Orchestra on Sunday, November 18 at 3:00 pm. The performance is part of the church’s Chamber Concert Series. Selections include: Sinfonia No. 6 in F Major K 43 by W.A. Mozart, Serenade for String Orchestra, Op 12 by Victor Herbert, and Gabriel’s Oboe by Enrico Morricone.
James Kazik, staff arranger at one of the premiere Washington D.C. service bands since 2001, will conduct the Chamber Orchestra. Kazik is a renowned composer and orchestrator, staff writer for Hal Leonard Corp, and the current composer-in-residence for the Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic in Washington D.C.
“This program will offer something for everyone,” noted Artistic Director John Vreeland.

Unity at The Table
Today is National Unity Day, but you’d never know it by looking at the headlines and news. Everyday at The Table at St. George’s is National Unity Day – Kindness/Acceptance/Inclusion. Yesterday the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank came in to do their annual inspection of our food pantry. One of the questions concerned who we allow to shop. Our answer was anyone who walks in the door and asks for food. We invite them to come back weekly as long as they have a need. Another question was about the area we serve. We have people come from Manassas, Triangle, King George, Caroline, Orange, Stafford, Spotsylvania, as well as Fredericksburg. We even serve people passing thru Virginia who have been told to go to The Table.
One of our regulars told us that when she wakes up on Tuesday, she is happy because she knows she will be welcomed at The Table where she’ll find community and veggies! How lovely is that!! The fields and orchards are almost done for the year. A volunteer commented last night that he is seeing more people on the street, and we definitely experienced an upturn in numbers last night. The woolly worms are supposedly predicting a rough winter. Someone handed me a bag of potatoes for The Table & said it was a Buy One/Get One deal at her store, but she could only use one. Every grocery store seems to have an abundance of offers like that & if you can’t use the extra box, can or bag yourself, please think of The Table. We can definitely use it.
Volunteer and Get Involved
The Table and our Community Dinner ministries are in need of volunteers. Our produce team needs adult and teen volunteers on Sunday afternoons from 2:30 – 4 p.m. to meet and unload the fresh produce from the farm truck. Crates can weigh up to 40 lbs., so a little muscle helps. 3rd Monday of the month Community Dinners need to update their list of volunteers. If you are able to come serve, clean up, wash dishes between 4:30 to 7 p.m., please let us know. For both – Contact Grace in Action to get involved.
