C.A.R.E “The Power of Change” Grant Supports The Table at St. George’s

April 18, 2018 by St. George's Leave a Comment

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

C.A.R.E “THE POWER OF CHANGE” GRANT SUPPORTS THE TABLE AT ST. GEORGE’S

The Table at St. George’s has been awarded The Power of Change grant from the Community Awareness of Rappahannock Electric Charity, Inc. (C.A.R.E.).

Fredericksburg, VA: The Community Awareness of Rappahannock Electric Charity, Inc. (C.A.R.E.) has awarded $5,200 to The Table at St. George’s, a Partner Agency of the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank. “The Power of Change” grant will be used to add fruit to The Table’s weekly produce offering.
The Table at St. George’s is a market style, produce centered pantry. They provide groceries to 150 – 200 families a week—the vast majority of whom are working families experiencing a period of financial crisis. The Table relies on the generosity of local businesses, individuals, and grant funds to feed our community.
“This grant will impact our community on a weekly basis,” noted The Rev. Deacon Carey Dougherty Connors, Director of Outreach Ministries at St. George’s Episcopal Church. “Fresh fruit is not always easy for us to provide. This funding will help ensure we can give apples, oranges, and bananas to those least able to afford them, improving the health of our entire community.”
Partner of the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank.

ABOUT THE POWER OF CHANGE
The Power of Change receives its funding from REC members who volunteer to have their electric bill rounded-up to the next highest whole dollar. If Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) provides your power, we ask that you consider supporting The Power of Chance to help others in need. Once enrolled, the extra change from your electric bill will be dedicated to charitable causes. Members can sign up by visiting REC’s website (www.thepowerofchange.org) or by calling 800-552-3904. The average member contribution is approximately $6.00 per year and is tax deductible. An annual statement of your charitable contribution will be mailed to you.

We had a beautiful Holy Week this year!

A big thank you to all of our volunteers. Your dedication and spirit of service lightened the load for our staff and ministered to everyone who came to our Holy Week services.

Thanks especially to our musicians, Altar Guild, and Flower Guild. You went above and beyond to ensure our church was beautifully decorated and filled with joyful music.

We hope you enjoy the highlights below in pictures and also a video of our Easter Egg Hunt!

2018 Holy Week and Easter Schedule: Celebrate with Us

February 23, 2018 by St. George's Leave a Comment

Easter is a time of celebration and fellowship. We invite you to join us at any or all of our Holy Week and Easter services.

Palm Sunday:

March 25 7:45 am, 9 am, 11:15 am, 5:30 pm, 8 pm Compline, (Nave)

Taize Service:

Tuesday, March 27, 7 pm, (Nave)
This service gently opens our hearts for Holy Week through the repetition of Taize hymns along with readings from scripture and prayers.

Maundy Thursday:

Service with Foot-washing: March 29 7 pm, (Nave)
We enter into the experience of the disciples stunned by Jesus’ insistence that he would take on the role of a servant and wash the feet of the others.  Anyone who wishes will be able to have their feet washed – and wash the feet of others.  The service will continue with Eucharist followed by the stripping of the altar.  Stripping the church of every bit of decoration, we go to dark Gethsemane with the disciples, where they struggled to stay awake as Jesus prayed.

Good Friday: March 30

Services: 12 pm, 7 pm (Nave)
On Good Friday, we meet in a church that is so bare it even sounds different.  We read the account of the Crucifixion according to the Gospel of John, following the traditional Prayer Book Good Friday service.

Stations of the Cross: 1:45 pm (Meet at Micah Ministries)
For hundreds of years, the Stations have been a way to make a virtual pilgrimage in the spirit of pilgrims to Jerusalem walking the Via Dolorosa. We will walk in procession, stopping fourteen times at different sites in downtown Fredericksburg to pray and mark moments in Jesus’ journey to the cross and tomb.

Walk the Labyrinth: 9 am – 5 pm, (Sydnor Hall)
The labyrinth is an ancient spiritual tool.  Its winding path becomes a mirror of the way we live our lives. It touches our sorrows and releases our joys. Please join us to walk, search, and follow with an open mind and an open heart.

Holy Saturday: March 31

Morning Prayer
8:30 am, (Nave)

Liturgy of the Light Children’s Service 5 pm (Sydnor Hall)
The Liturgy of the Light is one of the beautiful experiences Catechesis of the Good Shepherd gives us. It is a children’s Easter Vigil service, and adults are welcome as well. Each child receives their own “light of Christ,” and we conclude with a simple Eucharist prepared by the children. We will celebrate the Liturgy of the Light in Sydnor Hall. Nursery provided for toddlers and babies.

Easter Vigil 8 pm (Nave)
At the Easter Vigil, we gather in a darkened church. We light the Paschal (Easter) candle, and we are warmed by the candlelight retelling of stories from the Hebrew Scriptures. We sing our Alleluias for the first time in forty days! And we proceed with a celebration of the first Eucharist of Easter. Afterward, the celebration continues with festive food and drink at the Paschal Party in Sydnor Hall. In all, it is a powerful and dramatic celebration of Easter.

Easter Sunday: April 1

Sunrise Easter Service at 6:30 am (Outside Fredericksburg United Methodist)
Our ministry partners from Micah Ecumenical Ministries gather for a joint service in front of Fredericksburg United Methodist. Together, we greet the sunrise, share joy with each other, and begin our Easter celebrations in community.

Easter Eucharist at 7:45 am, 9 am, 11:15 am
Easter Egg Hunt: 10:30 am

  • Preschool and Younger: Outside Sydnor
  • K – 2nd: Graveyard gate
  • 3rd grade and up: Lawn across from George St.

5:30 pm (Celtic Evensong with Eucharist);
8 pm Compline (Nave)

Lenten Weekend 2018

January 8, 2018 by St. George's Leave a Comment

Practicing Heaven Here and Now: The Book of Revelation and a vision for life in our time (not the end time!)

Featuring the Very Rev. Dr. Michael Battle, Director of the Desmond Tutu Center in New York City

How do we practice heaven together? The Very Rev. Dr. Michael Battle contends the book of Revelation is a hopeful call for our own time to bring heaven on earth in beloved community—not merely a perilous vision of end times. Join our guest speaker as he connects our contemporary struggles with the ancient Book of Revelation and the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Archbishop Desmond Tutu and others.

As St. George’s continues its ministry of welcome for all in a spirit of healing and reconciliation, we are excited to welcome the Rev. Battle as our Lenten weekend speaker in 2018. We hope his presentations will help us grow closer as neighbors who want to see God in each other and work together to make God’s dream a reality on earth.

The Rev. Dr. Battle is widely known in the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion. The author of nine books, he was ordained by Archbishop Desmond Tutu in 1993. He currently is a professor and Director of the Desmond Tutu Center at General Theological Seminary in New York. His latest book (2017), “Heaven on Earth: God’s Call to Community in the Book of Revelation,” contends that Revelation is a hopeful call to bring heaven on earth, not a frightening vision of the end times.
