Annual Meeting 2018 Details

November 29, 2018 by St. George's Leave a Comment

St. George’s will gather for its annual meeting to elect the next class of vestry members on Dec 9 at 10:00 a.m. in the church nave at a combined meeting and worship service. There will be no 9 or 11:15 services. We will still hold the 7:45 and 5:30 services but voting will only occur at 10. The meeting and service are open to everyone.

Why are we shifting to a different format this year?

The main business of the annual meeting is electing four vestry members for 3-year terms. Our Episcopal church canons (laws) require us to “elect” vestry members. Many of us have struggled with this process as it means some people are chosen while others may feel rejected. Selecting church leaders is rightfully a spiritual discernment of whom God is calling, not a popularity contest. Conducting the election in the context of a worship service will set a more prayerful mood. Last year we offered voting opportunities at all the services. This was really stretching the limits of how the Diocese expects us to conduct the election. We will only vote during the 10:00 a.m. service and meeting this year. And again, I hope that it will bring an enhanced sense of discerning God’s will together.

The canons stipulate that only registered members of the parish, in good standing (actively attending and financially contributing) are eligible to vote. If you are not sure if you are registered, please contact the church office asap. We operate the election on the honor system. If you are not eligible to vote, we ask that you participate by praying during the election portion of the service while others fill out their ballots.

By combining the meeting with our principal worship service, I hope that we have a greater sense of participation as a whole congregation than we have had at separate meetings in Sydnor Hall. I encourage as many people to attend as possible from all the services so that we can see and pray with one another. Some have expressed concern that the children in the service may get restless. We will provide a special activity for kids to do during the announcements which will be somewhat extended but not too much. We are spreading out elements of the meeting throughout the service, so that it will flow along. There will also be fewer reports as we have had at other annual meetings. My hope is to have a meeting in February 2019 to give a true “annual report” of 2018.

As always I welcome your feedback and ideas. As we try a new thing, I pray God blesses our meeting and gives us wisdom and grace as we worship and give thanks for St. George’s and the opportunities we have to serve, care, learn, pray, give, and grow together.

Your rector and brother in Christ,
Joe+

Annual Parish Meeting and Vestry Election

November 20, 2018 by St. George's Leave a Comment

Save the date! 10 a.m. on December 9. Come celebrate our blessings of the past year and look ahead to 2018. There will be a 10 a.m. service during which the Annual Meeting and voting will occur. See the vestry candidate profiles below and please join us in prayerful discernment as we consider who we elect to serve on our Vestry.

Kris Boyd
Regularly attends 9 a.m. worship service
Having grown up in the Episcopal Church, I watched my parents and grandparents serve on vestry. As a child, I knew that one day I too would run for vestry. During my adult life, I have served in various leadership positions within the church, but not vestry. I have put much prayer and consideration to this. I feel called to this ministry and hope to use this opportunity to grow, learn and serve the church in a new way of living into my baptismal vows.

I am a cradle Episcopalian. My love for church and my relationship with the Trinity was nurtured and strengthened by my family. Church and my faith have always been an important part of my life, although there were a few years as an adult when grief slowed down my attendance and participation while I wrestled with God. I was brought back to a more active participation when my husband and I became parents. Raising our daughter gave me a new understanding of God’s love for us as a parent. I am grateful to be a member of this parish.

Relevant professional / volunteer experience:

  • Elementary school librarian
  • Former 3rd grade teacher

Sample ministries where Kris has served:

  • Teaching children’s formation
  • Education for Ministry (EfM)

After work I devoted my energy to the Greek American community and the performing arts. I studied music and played the clarinet for many years. I retired to Virginia in 2013 and made the decision to give back to community. I have done so through the Fredericksburg AARP and St. George’s. And, in this spirit, I would like to contribute further as a vestry member.

Ralph Powell
Regularly attends 11:15 a.m. worship service
I believe my experience on Vestry, especially as Finance Chair and Stewardship Chair is needed as we approach the 300th anniversary of St. George’s. Also my experience in working with the consulting firm on the Nave Renovation would be useful if and when we undertake another capital campaign.

Ralph and his wife Diane have two grown sons, a grandson, a granddaughter and a great granddaughter. They moved to Fredericksburg from Trumbull, Connecticut in 2001 after Ralph retired from Bankers Trust/Deutsche Bank in New York City, as Vice-President, Infrastructure Finance. At Trinity Episcopal Church in Trumbull, he had been Treasurer, on Vestry, in choir, and many other roles. Matt is a great family man of strong faith in Christ who is a regular and dedicated member of St. George’s Episcopal Church. His work with the St. George’s youth ministry is commendable considering this is in additional to his dedication to his own children. Matt is eager to take on responsibility and give back to his church and community.

Matt, his wife Lauren and daughter Mia have been attending St Georges since 2012. They welcomed their son Wyatt to the world in 2014. Matt and Lauren were confirmed in 2016 and both of their children were baptized that same year. 2019 Vestry Nominations Open

October 15, 2018 by St. George's Leave a Comment

Nominations are now open for St. George’s Vestry. There are four positions opening up for the class that will serve 2019-2021. The vestry is the parish council of lay persons, elected by other active members of the parish, who, with the rector, have responsibility for the care and control of church property and the transaction of the business of the congregation. At St. George’s, the vestry is also a group that helps the rector, other clergy, staff, and commissions to discern and carry out the vision of where God is calling us as a congregation. There is “business” to which we must attend, but there is also a lot of joyful sharing and growing in faith and love.

For more information about being on the vestry, see our job description. Please submit names by November 11. Use this online form or contact a vestry member.

Vestry Notes: April 2018

May 2, 2018 by St. George's Leave a Comment

During the month of April, the vestry continued to listen to the body. The topic of the month was stories about St. George’s. It was scheduled to coincide with our Round Up, which will be a story sharing (telling and /or listening) in Market Square on Saturday, May 5th. From 1:00-3:00 we will move from story circle to story circle, as we feel so moved, and listen to stories about the past, the present, and the future. There will be stories for grown-ups and for children and for those of us who move in and out of those categories. Of course all are welcome and all will be listened to and, I feel certain, all will have a great time. And there will be cookies!

The topic “Stories about St. George’s” is harder to capture on 3 x 5 index cards, but you tantalized us with your notes. We want to hear more!

“Me and my friends got attacked by a Frog at shrinemont last year” is one that grabbed my attention! If you know this story, please share it on the 5th.

With the prompt “At St. George’s, I’ve always wondered,” we received lots of queries:

“. . .how the “St. George’s cross” became the St. George’s cross.” Anyone know?

“. . .how did St. George’s address issues of Race, Same Sex Marriage in the past?”

“. . .what the inside of the bell tower looks like.” Anyone got some photos that they could pass around the story circle?

“. . .if it’s true that parishioners burned down the original church building near Culpeper, so they could move the church to Fredericksburg?”

“. . .how much we spend on the tons and tons of food that we distribute through The Table.”

“. . .how we’re going to solve our parking problem.”

One parishioner noted “I’ve been here ever since I was a baby.” I hope she will be at the Round Up, because I bet she’ll have lots of good stories! Another mentioned their first experience of St. George’s and how they were welcomed; and another noted who they first met at St. G’s and how that changed their life. Wonderful, wonderful stories to be told! Great questions to be answered! Precious memories to be carried forward. Join us to hear them and to share them.

. . .and in May, stop by the Vestry Table in Sydnor between services and talk with us.

The Vestry is IN…and would love to hear from YOU!

Vestry Notes: March 2018

April 11, 2018 by St. George's Leave a Comment

As all the activities of Holy Week and Easter crowded our days, it was easy to lose sight of ongoing tasks. However, I don’t want all your excellent comments and suggestions to our Listen To The Body campaign in February to be something we lose sight of. In response to our invitation Talk with us about…accessibility, you did!

  • One of the most frequent comments we received was about our “perilous” front steps, and many of us thought a center rail would be helpful. Unfortunately we have found, after investigation, that those steps are not wide enough to accommodate a center rail and comply with the building code. Let’s keep thinking and, if anyone comes up with possible alternatives, pass them along to the Vestry.

On a more positive note,

  • We are working on creating appropriate signage compliant with ADA regulations.
  • In April, we will replace the sound system in the nave, which will help with clarity of the spoken word throughout the nave and improve our ability to record and transmit our services.
  • We are replacing/updating the hearing assistance system for people who are hard of hearing.
  • We have a masonry contractor spot-testing the paints on the church buildings to determine how they may best be removed in order to examine and properly repoint the brick work.
  • We have had a contractor look at the most damaged areas of the floor in Sydnor Hall and give us an estimate for repairing those spots. We must decide whether to spend almost $4,000 for repairs now, knowing that we may replace that floor in a matter of months.

My next note will be a report of the responses to March’s appeal: Talk to us about…buildings and grounds. Our plan is to identify dreams and challenges together, then to consult professionals to explore solutions, to outline and schedule the steps necessary to move forward, to contract for the work to be done, and to raise the money to pay for it. Without a doubt, we are all in this together. The Vestry wants you to be informed and we want your input every step of way—your questions and comments at every opportunity. We look forward to talking with you.
