Meet Adrienne Davis

The Episcopal Young Adult Service Corps asks young adults ages 21-30 a few simple questions:

Do you want to be a part of what God is doing in the world?
Are you ready for an experience that will transform your life?
Do you want to experience diverse cultures, make a spiritual commitment, and reflect on your vocational possibilities?
If your answer is “Yes!” then you are ready to serve with the Young Adult Service Corps (YASC) in a one-year international mission assignment.

Adrienne Davis answered “Yes!” to the above questions, and she is The Diocese of Virginia’s only young adult serving this year with YASC. Adrienne was a regular at our Celtic service and sometimes helped with our youth as a student at University of Mary Washington. St. George’s in the Civil War: A Lecture

Love Civil War history? Join us on August 3, 2016 at 7 p.m. as National  Park Service ranger Steward Henderson explores the roles the church played and the events that shaped the church’s life as “War Comes to the Church.”

During the Civil War, St. George’s functioned as a fortress, a center of revivals. and a hospital twice during the conflict. As a fortress, the church saw action on Dec. 11, 1862, 2 days before the main battle as there was fighting in the streets. As Frank O’Reilly writes in his history of the Battle of Fredericksburg: “Mississippians entered houses and fired from windows commanding William and George Street. Some of the Confederates took over Saint George’s Episcopal Church and probably the Presbyterian Church for a clear shot down George Street.”

West Virginia Flood Relief

Significant flooding in West Virginia has wreaked havoc, leaving widespread damage and the loss of nearly two dozen lives in its wake. The Bishop of West Virginia, the Rt. Rev. W. Michie Klusmeyer, has reported that Episcopal Relief and Development will be sending them a short-term grant to help with immediate needs.
One of the hardest hit areas was in far southeastern West Virginia in Greenbrier county, and St. James’ Episcopal Church in Lewisburg has taken a key role in local response efforts.  Partnering with the local United Way, St. James’ has been designated an aid distribution center, handing out food, clothing and other basic necessities to those affected in the surrounding regions.
St. George’s is collecting for West Virginia flood victims. There is an urgent need for toothbrushes, toothpaste, baby formula, bottles, diapers of any size and baby food (please make sure your donations are not past the expiration date). We have boxes lined up in the hallway outside the office. We will collect through Sunday, July 10th. Donations will then be taken to St. James’ Episcopal Church in Lewisburg.
The Rector of St. James’, the Rev. Josh Saxe, said that the work had been “non-stop” but he also said that they were planning to be in it “for the long haul.”
