Tuesday Book Group: Mere Christianity

September 28, 2017 by St. George's Leave a Comment

Join our Tuesday night book discussion group! This season we’ll be reading Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis. Lewis, an Anglican, intended to describe the Christian common ground. In Mere Christianity, he aims at avoiding controversies to explain fundamental teachings of Christianity, for the sake of those basically educated as well as the intellectuals of his generation, for whom the jargon of formal Christian theology did not retain its original meaning.

“Lewis seeks to help us see religion with fresh eyes,”  The New Yorker stated, “If wit and wisdom, style and scholarship are requisites to passage through the pearly gates, Mr. Lewis will be among the angels.”  The New York Times Book Review identified Lewis as the ideal persuader for the half-convinced, for the good man who would like to be a Christian but finds his intellect getting in the way.”  The publisher, Harper One, identified Lewis’ book as being one of the most popular introductions to Christian faith ever written, saying Lewis “provides an unequaled opportunity for believers and nonbelievers alike to hear a powerful, rational case for the Christian faith.”

Meets Tuesday nights at 7:15 in the Elsie Lewis Room starting October 10. Contact Nanette Lofaro  (call the office at 540-373-4133 if you need us to put you in touch) for more information.
