Building a Compassionate Community at Home – Using the basics of Conscious Discipline (CD), Wendy Cannon and Danielle Davis will explore Dr. Becky Bailey’s theory of classroom management and how it can be applied to parenting. The key to this method is being aware, or conscious, of why children (and adults) react the way they do in certain situations. Understanding the “why” helps teachers and parents better respond and help model appropriate behavior. The workshop will meet Sundays, May 15 and 22 at 10 a.m. in Faulkner Hall. Attendance at both sessions is helpful, but not mandatory.
During the first week, we will discuss how the brain responds to situations and techniques to get into proper “brain space” to deal with these situations in a calm, rational manner. We will reflect on our “hot buttons” and the various types of guidance systems we may have grown up with and focus on responsibility guidance.
In the second session, we will explore the key skills of discipline (as in practice, not punishment!). We will also discuss ways to help build a compassionate community at home where everyone can contribute and belong.
