St. George’s 2017 Parish Retreat: Building Bridges
Oct. 6-8, 2017
Shrine Mont is a place where people are more important than things; where prayer and reflection, rest and recreation are more important than appointments and tasks. Shrine Mont is where we connect as a community and finally have time to meet each other, laugh together, and share stories of difficult commutes and ….set life down for awhile. Shrine Mont is a place where kids play out in God’s own creation and we all give thanks for streams and flowers and ponds full of fish. Shrine Mont is marshmallows and memories—a place where we celebrate being part of the family of God.
Our theme this year is “Building Bridges.” Bridges are all about connections and crossings. In a world with more ways than ever to connect, the irony is that it sometimes seems harder to bridge the gaps. Shrine Mont gives us time and opportunity to cross over to meet each other and hear each other’s stories. Our keynote speaker this year is The Rev. Deacon Ed Jones, Secretary of the Diocese of Virginia and a St. Georgian. For the past few years, he and others at the diocese have been working to build bridges in many ways. Ed will share some stories of how God’s people have come together even though they didn’t always agree on everything. We hope his stories will inspire us to share our own stories of building bridges and finding hope.
The prophet Isaiah talked about building up highways —think of aqueducts, bridge-like structures for crossing gaps. “Go through, go through the gates, prepare the way for the people; build up, build up the highway, clear it of stones, lift up a signal over the peoples. (Isaiah 62:10). After the people of God were forced to leave home for a generation, Isaiah casts a vision of building bridges so that the people of God can connect again with each other and with God. We hope this year’s Shrine Mont weekend is a gateway experience for all as we reunite and seek God’s beautiful dwelling places together.
The Shrine Mont retreat facility is owned and operated by the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia. Lodging is in a quaint old hotel and nearby cottages, all with private baths. Meals are served in the large dining room of Virginia House, the main conference facility. Tips are appreciated by the dining room staff.
