A quiet ministry of St. George’s is the support for the local Cold Night Shelter run by MICAH. The shelter offers a place to stay overnight for homeless men and women during the 3-4 months of winter weather. Buses pick up guests from the locations of each community dinner in the city, drive them to the shelter, and then drive them back the next morning to the location of the MICAH breakfast.
Area churches provide teams of volunteers to help set up, and check-in the night’s guests at the shelter. Teams also provide snacks and other items requested by MICAH. In addition, a number of St. Georgian’s knit or crochet scarves and donate them to the shelter guests. And scarves were made during Rally Sunday as well.
For 2017, according to Anna Colopy, the coordinator of this effort, the teams started at the shelter on Dec. 5. They have snacks, coffee, hot chocolate, scarves and shirts to distribute. The teams serve the 1st , 2nd and 5th Mondays and have a steady and loyal group. This year’s volunteers are the Bullocks, Tebbutts, Steeles, Colopys, CJ Black and her two sons, Ian Valentine, and Jody Miller.
