Advent Programs

Advent marks the four Sundays before Christmas, a time to prepare room in our hearts for the coming of Christ. On Sundays, some of our worship selections, prayers, etc. will change to reflect the season. There are several Advent offerings during the week as well, including noon prayers, as always, Monday-Friday. Amidst the hustle and bustle that is “the Christmas season” of our society, embrace this liturgical time of slowing down and looking for God’s light entering our lives.

We have some special offerings during Advent that you will want to check out. RSVP to the office helpful, but not necessary.

Advent Quiet Day: Dec. 5, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Faulkner Hall. Ends with a simple lunch. Join our clergy, the Revs. Gay M. Rahn and Joe Hensley, as they lead us in reflecting on this season of preparation for the coming of Christ into our lives. Adults and mature youth welcome. Come and go as needed. Childcare available.

Centering Prayer: Dec. 2, 9, and 16 at 6 p.m. in Faulkner Hall. Come and learn about this ancient Christian contemplative practice that gives you a method of “being still” and resting in the silence of God.

Lectio Divina: Dec. 3, 10, and 17 in at 7 p.m. in Faulkner Hall. Advent is a holy season of the liturgical year. Come share this special time with a small group using the ancient, contemplative practice of Lectio Divina, or “Divine Reading.” Through reading scripture, listening to each other’s reflections, prayer and meditation, we will give the scripture new life and meaning and let God speak directly to our hearts.   Facilitated by Tom Rotella, the Advent Lectio Divina Group will meet in Faulkner Hall from 7-8:30 p.m. for three weeks starting Dec. 3. RSVP to the church office at 540-373-4133 helpful but not required. You need bring nothing but yourself and an open heart.

Dealing With Loss During the Holidays: Dec. 8 and 15, 7-8:15 p.m., 3rd floor.  Whether you’ve lost a loved one, a job, your health, your home, learn ways to manage loss and grief, a difficult process any time of year. Led by Mike Fray, Ph.D., and Gay M. Rahn. Child care available upon request. To register, please call 373-4133 or email gay.rahn@stgeorgesepiscopal.net.
