GO and GO: Giving as One and Growing as One
St. George’s Episcopal Church Stewardship Campaign for 2017
John 17:22-23 is one of the guiding verses that our stewardship commission has studied as we prepare for this year’s campaign. God is a giver, by nature. God gives glory and love to Christ who then passes them on to us. Those gifts are given so that we might know what it means to be “one.”
The mission of the church is defined in the Book of Common Prayer as: “to restore all persons to unity with God and each other in Christ.” Our theme: “Giving as One and Growing as One” is all about connecting our gifts and our habits of giving with our growth as a community. The pathway approach, “sending” the pledge cards household to household (just as we are sent and Christ was sent), is a way both to gather the gift pledges and to connect neighbors with each other.
When we share our financial gifts with the church, we share in mutual love with God and each other through the Body of Christ, which is the church.
John 17:22-23 New Revised Standard Version The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
John 17:22-23 New International Version (NIV)
22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
The Message (Bible paraphrase by Eugene Peterson):
The same glory you gave me, I gave them,
So they’ll be as unified and together as we are—
I in them and you in me.
Then they’ll be mature in this oneness,
And give the godless world evidence
That you’ve sent me and loved them
In the same way you’ve loved me.
