Vestry Nominations Open
Nominations are now open for St. George’s Vestry. There are four positions opening up in 2018. The vestry is the parish council of lay persons, elected by other active members of the parish, who, with the rector, have responsibility for the care and control of church property and the transaction of the business of the congregation. At St. George’s, the vestry is also a group that helps the rector, other clergy, staff, and commissions to discern and carry out the vision of where God is calling us as a congregation. There is “business” to which we must attend, but there is also a lot of joyful sharing and growing in faith and love.
For more information about being on the vestry, see our job description. Please submit names by Nov. 6. Use this online form or contact a vestry member.
Tuesday Book Group: Mere Christianity
Join our Tuesday night book discussion group! This season we’ll be reading Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis. Lewis, an Anglican, intended to describe the Christian common ground. In Mere Christianity, he aims at avoiding controversies to explain fundamental teachings of Christianity, for the sake of those basically educated as well as the intellectuals of his generation, for whom the jargon of formal Christian theology did not retain its original meaning.
“Lewis seeks to help us see religion with fresh eyes,” The New Yorker stated, “If wit and wisdom, style and scholarship are requisites to passage through the pearly gates, Mr. Lewis will be among the angels.” The New York Times Book Review identified Lewis as the ideal persuader for the half-convinced, for the good man who would like to be a Christian but finds his intellect getting in the way.” The publisher, Harper One, identified Lewis’ book as being one of the most popular introductions to Christian faith ever written, saying Lewis “provides an unequaled opportunity for believers and nonbelievers alike to hear a powerful, rational case for the Christian faith.”
Meets Tuesday nights at 7:15 in the Elsie Lewis Room starting October 10. Contact Nanette Lofaro (call the office at 540-373-4133 if you need us to put you in touch) for more information.
Rite 13 Class Starts Oct. 1
Why are humans such an important part of God’s creation?
What does it mean to us that we are created in the image of God?
What makes us so wonderfully and fearfully made?
How does God call God’s people into God’s work in the world?
Why does God search us out?
What does it mean to be known by God?
Pondering these questions is part of our Rite 13 program. Our fall Rite 13 class is Sunday mornings October 1 – November 12, 2017 in the Elsie Lewis Room next to our nursery at 10 a.m. culminating in the Rite 13 liturgy at the 9 a.m. service on November 19. Parent’s information meeting is this Sunday, October 1 at 10 a.m. on the youth floor in the small classroom. Children who are 14 and have not participated in a Rite 13 liturgy are invited to attend as well as all youth who are or will be 13 by May 2018.
