Youth in Global Community is a mission team of senior high school girls and their mothers who are exploring the intersection of gender, culture and faith. In all cultures around the world women and girls are the most vulnerable and the most marginalized of groups – impacted deeply by climate change, poverty and violence. Our faith calls us to respond to the need; our privilege allows to look for answers. The group began meeting in September and meets once a month for six months to learn about the issues. Each month we meet or reclaim a sister from Scripture who can serve as an example of women working with God to make changes for the good of all.
In March of each year the group takes all that they have learned and travel to New York City for the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. There we join hundreds of Anglican women and girls from around the world in a series of meetings exploring the answers. We join with the Episcopal and Anglican delegates to the United Nations in an opening Eucharist and see our church at work in the world in profoundly meaningful ways. When we return the work of understanding each girl’s personal call begins. What do we do with this gift we have been given? As the youth head off to university study or adult life we hope that the seeds planted here come to fruition as they see their Church as an active and serious partner in their lives.
