Historically, people have come to the Church, because they want the Christian faith and the community of faith to be a part of their coming together as a couple in a covenantal relationship. They want the community to be part of the spiritual foundation of their life together. At St. George’s, we welcome couples seeking the blessing of the church on their relationships. It is vital for everyone seeking these sacred services to understand that they are holy signs in our community of faith. Therefore, we only hold weddings for active members of St. George’s and immediate family members.
Our covenantal life with God is expressed in relationships of commitment and faithfulness, including those of heterosexual and same-sex couples. The Celebration and Blessing of a Marriage is a traditional sacrament of the Church. This service of worship is included in The Book of Common Prayer. In 2015, the General Convention of the Episcopal Church authorized provisional marriage liturgies that extend the sacrament of marriage to any couple (heterosexual or same-sex). Weddings at St. George’s may be performed according to the traditional or provisional services. It is our joy to celebrate and witness all marriages as signs of God’s love, to pray for God’s grace to support couples in their life together, and to join with these couples in our shared witness to the gospel in the world.
