Worship at St. George’s is a joyful partnership between clergy and laity (non-ordained). Together, we raise our voices, prayers, and thanksgivings in celebration of the Love of God, Peace of Christ, and Power of the Holy Spirit.
St. Georgians of all ages help prepare and lead our worship services. From acolytes, to lectors, to flower guild, to altar guild, and more, there’s plenty of ways to get involved and share your gifts with others.
Acolytes
Acolytes at St. George’s range in age from 4th graders through adults. They serve as gospel book bearers, candle acolytes, crucifer, and on special occasions – banner carriers. Acolytes assist the clergy during worship and serve at 9 am and 11:15 am worship services (10 am during the summer). Training sessions are held 2 – 3 times a year.
Acolytes typically serve once every 4 – 5 weeks, and family members are usually scheduled to serve together for their convenience. If you’re interested in becoming an acolyte, contact the church office.
Flower Guild
The members of St. George’s Flower Guild offer a wide range of talents and abilities, but all share a love of flowers and a love of the church. They create arrangements to the glory of God for weekly services and for the holidays. Men and women with an interest in floral design are welcome to join. The Guild offers workshops and training, so no experience is required to join. If you’d like more information about our Flower Guild or find out how to get involved, click here and send us a message.
Flower Guild members sign up to provide the altar flowers for a specific Sunday. Members work together or with a partner. Generally, the arranger purchases and conditions the needed flowers by Friday. All expenses are reimbursed after submitting request. Arrangers can condition at home or in the sacristy, with arrangements completed and in place by Saturday afternoon. Arrangers maintain the arrangement during the following week and disassembly it by the following Friday so space and containers are ready for the next arranger.
Altar Guild
The Altar Guild is the ministry of preparing and maintaining the altar, sacred vessels, and vestments for our worship services. They prepare the worship space for Holy Eucharist, Baptism, funerals, and weddings with tender attention to detail.
Members of the Altar Guild perform a silent, or hidden, life-giving ministry. If you would like to help prepare the altar for worship, the Altar Guild welcomes you. Training is provided. If you would like to learn more about the Altar Guild or volunteer, please click here and send us a message.
Hospitality
Ushers and greeters provide hospitality to those attending worship. Ushers help worshipers find a seat, provide directions, assist with the offering, and answer questions guests may have. Our greeters are the usually the first face worshipers encounter on Sundays. They provide a warm smile, genuine hello, and make newcomers feel right at home.
Our coffee hour hosts provide hospitality during fellowship time following morning worship services. They brew coffee, set out snacks, and tidy up afterward. If you would like to learn more about serving as an usher, greeter, or coffee hour host, contact us here.
Lectors, Prayer Readers, and Liturgical Coordinators
Lectors read the scripture readings on Sundays and prayer readers provide intercessory prayer by reading the Prayers of the People aloud. Those who prefer more behind the scenes work might prefer serving as a liturgical coordinator. They provide logistical support making sure all servers are present and accounted for on Sunday mornings.
