Below find short descriptions of some of our community and outreach partners. St. George’s often coordinates with these organizations to help with community projects. Contact our outreach ministry for more information on any of these groups.
School Dressing Days– School Dressing Days is an Interfaith Community event that provides children with school supplies and clothes to start the school year with. Each child gets a new outfit: jeans and a shirt, two pairs of underwear and two pairs of socks. Some get new backpacks and school supplies, depending on how many are on hand. Anyone living in Fredericksburg or the five surrounding counties can stop by for help during the three-day event which helps over 1,000 children start the new school year in comfort.
Cold Night Shelter– For those without a warm place to sleep, the Micah Cold Night Shelter is open every night November through March. St. George’s team arrives at the shelter, minutes from downtown, at 6 p.m. on the first and second Monday nights of each month. We work with the professional staff to make beds and help settle everyone in, leaving by 7:30 p.m. at the latest. Paid staff stays overnight. Interested in helping out? Contact Anna Colopy.
Micah Ecumenical Ministries– Micah is a Christ-centered community response to the needs of our neighbors. Aiding a largely homeless population, Micah provides a place where people can eat, shower and receive needed services. Micah also organizes free meals, the cold weather shelter, and a respite house where those without homes can recover from illness.
Big Brothers/Big Sisters: Providing community-based and school-based mentoring. Spending time together out in the local community is primarily how Bigs and Littles develop their relationship. After all, to change a child’s perspective of the world, it helps to spend some time out in it. Sometimes the best place for enjoying activities together is at the child’s school. And, the best part is, it can be a great learning experience, in or out of the classroom.
Hope House: The Hope House provides a safe haven for homeless mothers and their children in the Rappahannock Region who seek to turn their lives around and become independent and self-sufficient citizens. We support their efforts by providing the necessary life-skills in a structured environment that will enable them to gain and sustain employment. Sustainable employment is the only means of successfully gaining and maintaining permanent housing.
Moss Free Clinic: The Moss Free Clinic, which opened on November 2, 1993, began as a grass-roots effort to provide basic health care to people who are not eligible for government assistance, who do not have health insurance, and who fall within designated federal poverty guidelines. Moss Free Clinic’s mission is to: Provide free of charge, nondiscriminatory, quality health care services to the medically indigent residents throughout the jurisdictions of Caroline, Fredericksburg, King George, Spotsylvania, and Stafford. The Clinic puts particular emphasis on prevention and individual patient education, as well as providing early intervention, to prevent and/or treat illness and disease.
Empower House: Empower House is a non-profit organization providing confidential domestic violence assistance in the city of Fredericksburg and the counties of Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, and Caroline since 1978. These services include a free and confidential 24-hour hotline, a temporary emergency shelter, information, referrals, and advocacy.
Rappahannock Legal Services: RLS is a non-profit corporation that provides free civil legal assistance to low income individuals and families with three offices located in Fredericksburg, Tappahannock, and Culpeper to better serve area residents. RSL is funded by the federal, state, and local governments, as well as by a wide range of local individuals, churches, banks, agencies, and organizations, including the Rappahannock United Way and Piedmont United Way.
