Outreach Commission

It’s spring, and the Outreach Commission is springing into action. We have a new bulletin board to provide information in the coffee hour area, and the Help Wanted board has lots of ideas for ways to get involved in outreach in the community and beyond. Here are just a few examples:

  • Provide food for Bragg Hill Family Life Center or the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank
  • Enter data or provide Spanish-English translation at the Community Assessment Program
  • Drop off some paper towels and bleach at the Fredericksburg Christian Health Center
  • Build homes for Habitat for Humanity (Not good at building? You can still provide snacks)
  • Volunteer to watch the kids at Hope House while moms are learning to budget
  • Get some retail experience at the Hospice Thrift Store
  • Make breakfast for the Micah Hospitality  Center, or drop off some always-needed socks and undies
  • Serve as a receptionist at Moss Free Clinic, or provide some paper plates or office supplies
  • Be a pen pal to a New Vision client while she prepares to get out of prison and start a new life—or help her write a resume so she can get a job
  • Open your heart to a child and be a Big Brother or Big Sister
  • Be a victim’s advocate at RCASA, or staff a booth to raise awareness of issues surrounding sexual assault
  • Answer hotline calls at RCDV, or provide school supplies and toys for abused children and a gas card for their mom
  • Help Rappahannock Legal Service with a mailing, or drive a client to court
  • Volunteer at the Thurman Brisben Center, sorting clothing or serving meals for homeless persons and families
  • Take a trip to Mississippi and work with Camp Coast Care to repair Katrina’s devastation
  • Head for Honduras this summer to work with children
  • Rebuild homes at a Lakota Indian reservation in South Dakota this summer
  • Be a go-fer at Fred Camp in July, helping teens make home renovations
  • Participate in Assess-ability Weekend
  • Help with School Dressing Days this summer to get kids ready to go back to school

Don’t know where to start? Talk to someone on the Outreach Commission or attend the next outreach meeting—April 15, 12:15 pm, Elsie Lewis Room.

PEOPLE TOUCHING PEOPLE WITH CHRIST LOVE AT THE CENTER
 St. George’s Mission Trips

What are Mission Trips?

They are...windows through which to see the world and God's vision for it in new ways;....mirrors in which to see ourselves, our church, our culture more clearly;....doorways through which we enter into deeper fellowship with God and our neighbor;…voices through which we may hear God's call to us.
Do you have skills that you want to share? Do you have time to give? Do you want to make a difference?

We have the mission trip for you!

Camp Coast Care

Though their plight is no longer making national headlines, thousands of people are still living in limbo more than a year after Hurricane Katrina's devastating onslaught on the Gulf Coast in August 2005. Camp Coast Care operates recovery and reconstruction missions for those in need on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Please be advised that the recovery process has been approximated to take a minimum of 10 years. Volunteer help will be needed for years to come. While you are here, your work group may have a project that begins with digging trenches for foundations and pipe, or your work group may have a project that requires the gutting of a house, further yet your group project may be the finishing work such as trim and painting.

Our Little Roses Ministries – August 5-13

Our Little Roses Ministries serves Honduran girls whose young lives have been diminished by poverty and homelessness. Many are rescued from abuse or neglect. The mission invests in their potential to learn, bloom and prosper, by giving them a secure and loving home in a Christian community To this day, no other Honduran facility uniquely for homeless girls exists. Because uneducated girls with no skills have almost no opportunities to escape the poverty cycle, this ministry is dedicated to equipping these future young women to enter into middle class society, and to thrive.

St. George’s and several other parishes visit OLR every year, bringing supplies, conducting activities, establishing relationships, and nurturing the love and caring that grows between missioners and these children.

Rosebud Lakota Indian Reservation, South Dakota – July 14-21

Lakota Mission Team: Volunteers (minimum of 15 years of age) from churches in Fredericksburg, area including St George’s Episcopal Church, Fredericksburg United Methodist Church, St John’s Episcopal Church and Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Housing and “Project Managers” will be provided by the United Methodist Church, staying in their “Tree of Life” facility in Mission, SD.

Our mission is to refurbish Native American owned homes to make them more livable, safe and weatherproof, assist in stocking and selling items at the Methodist Thrift Shop or help serve noonday meals in a local church. We will take a full day off on Wednesday so people can do some sightseeing and R&R.
