Outreach and Mission Projects 2006

Hands On Mission Experience (HOME) team Fund Raiser

St. George’s, Robert B. Payne, and Quarles Petroleum Enter the Mulch Business

Thanks to a great group of volunteers from St. George’s including Bob Thompson from Robert B. Payne, and Ben Wafle from Quarles Petroleum, as well as tremendous support from parishioners who signed up to buy our product, St. George’s inaugural “Mulch Madness” project was a rousing success.

Volunteers gathered at Robert B. Payne’s at 7:00 AM on Saturday morning April 1st (No, this is not an April Fools joke!) and began loading and distributing bags of mulch from the six pallets which had been pre-staged there.  Meanwhile four large trucks provided by Bob Thompson and Ben Wafle shuttled another 15 pallets from Norfleet to the staging area while the fleet of volunteers and their trucks continued to pick up and distribute loads of mulch.

Jan Saylor and Pat Baughman served as dispatchers to ensure that orders were properly filled.  By 10:00 AM all 21 pallets of mulch (55 bags per pallet, 45 pounds per bag, a total of 26 TONS OF MULCH!!) were now in the hands of gardeners enjoying the remainder of this beautiful day.  When cleanup was completed at 10:30 AM all but 1 of 1,155 bags was accounted for.

The only problem we encountered was when one of our customers told the delivery crew that they knew nothing about a mulch delivery and had called the police.  As Tim Davis and his crew were digesting this information and forming possible courses of action, the customer said, “April Fool”.  Tim was somewhat chagrined, but also much relieved.

We raised almost $1,500 in about three hours time for the Hands On Mission Experience (HOME) team, but the most important thing is that efforts like this do so much to bring people together and serve as very real and visible evidence of God’s love at work in the world.

FredCamp 2006: July 9-15

FredCamp is a Christian youth work camp for high school students and adult chaperones. The primary focus is teaching teamwork, decision making, and leadership skills to participating youth. FredCamp repairs 10 homes right here in our own “neck of the woods,” primarily in Caroline and Spotsylvania Counties. You must be 14 by camp and/or going into the 9th grade. Spaces are limited and fill up fast.  Contact Jonathan Thomas at the church office (you may call him or click on his name below to send an email) for more information.

Rosebud Mission Trip to South Dakota 2006: July 8-15

The Rosebud team, over the past ten years, has worked hard to deliver the repairs that it promised and has earned the trust of the Lakota Sioux Tribe.  Prayerfully consider joining the Rosebud Reservation Mission team in South Dakota this summer. Team members should 15 or older.  Deadline to sign up is March 31st.  Even if you can't go to South Dakota this summer, you can join the mission team in spirit by donating money to purchase building materials.  Look on the bulletin board in the Family Room to see pictures of our projects and a "wish list" of materials for three of the six houses we will be working on (the other two churches have wish lists for the other 3 houses).  You can sign up to buy a piece of plywood, a kitchen cabinet, or even a bucket of paint.  Donations are tax deductible and should be made payable to St. George's (with Rosebud on the memo line). Every little bit helps and makes YOU a part of the team! Contact Earl Baughman (you may call him or click on his name below to send an email) for more information or to sign up before March 31st.
